Meta AI took #1 for local SEO Charleston SC
The top Google result for local SEO Charleston SC is now a Meta AI page built from Facebook group chatter. Here is what it names, and what it means for you.
I run the same block of Charleston searches every week and log the results in a plain file. Most weeks the top of local seo charleston sc is some mix of Thrive, PalmettoSoft, VIP Marketing, and a directory. This week the number one organic result was facebook.com.
Not a Facebook business page. Not an ad. A page at facebook.com/fb-answers/local-seo-services-charleston-sc, headed Local SEO Services Charleston SC, carrying a byline that reads, word for word, "Summarized by Meta AI." Under the byline sits a counter: "50 people talking about this."
I opened it in a real browser to read the literal text, because a page like this is exactly the kind of thing a summarizing tool will describe wrong. It is real, it is live, and it is not a one-off. There is a matching page for digital marketing services Charleston SC with its own counter at 52. At the bottom of each one is a block of links to siblings: web design companies Charleston SC, PPC advertising services Charleston, email marketing services Charleston, Charleston SC social media marketing, North Charleston SC video marketing. Meta has built a city-by-service grid, pointed an AI model at what people say in local Facebook groups, and published the summaries as indexable pages.
And one of them is now sitting above every agency website in this market for one of the highest-intent phrases we have.
What the page actually says
This is the part that stopped me.
The Charleston local SEO page names ChuckTown Websites, Fu Dog Media, KP Technology Solutions, Baldwin Digital, and Connection Website Designs. The digital marketing sibling names ChuckTown and Fu Dog again, plus Hometown Digital, Sherwood Media Services, Lowcountry Social, Legacy Digital, UnderDog Digital, SLMC Media, and Local Pixel.
Now hold that list against Google's own organic results for the identical query on the same day, which below the Meta page itself ran Thrive, VIP Marketing, Contractor Website Services, PalmettoSoft, DM Thrive, Lazarus Charleston, Holy Webs Charleston, and Rank The Coast.
Overlap between the two lists: zero. Not one company appears on both.
Same query, same city, same day, and the set of businesses Meta tells you to consider and the set Google ranks do not intersect at all. (The closest thing to a bridge is Fu Dog Media, which Meta names and which also turns up inside Google's own AI-written summary for the query, though not in the organic results themselves.)
If you have only ever measured your visibility on Google, there is a surface sitting above those results naming a dozen of your competitors, and you have never once appeared in your own reporting.
(I want to be careful here, because I have been burned by this exact kind of excitement before. These are tool-mediated readings, not a personalized SERP from a logged-in Charleston phone. I say the same thing every time I publish a position, including when I wrote up five of nine Charleston results changing in seven days. What I am confident about is not the precise rank. It is that the page exists, that it ranks on page one, and that the names on it are not the names on Google.)
Why this one is not like other ranking problems
Here is what makes this genuinely different, and it took me a minute to accept it.
You cannot optimize onto that page.
There is no title tag to write. No schema block to add. No internal link to run. No Core Web Vitals score that helps. The page is not reading websites at all. It is reading posts in Charleston Facebook groups: Local businesses of Charleston, Businesses of Charleston and Surrounding areas, Berkeley County Growth and Development, Lowcountry Business Networking, Clements Ferry Parkway Community Page, All Things Charleston. Real neighbors, in real groups, saying who they used and whether it worked.
Meta pointed a model at that, summarized it, and shipped it to Google.
So the ranking input is not what you publish. It is whether anyone around here talks about you.
At this point a decent chunk of people reading this are thinking: fine, I will go post in every Charleston Facebook group tonight. Please do not. Look at what actually got summarized. The companies that made it into Meta's paragraphs were the ones whose names came up in a thread where someone asked for a recommendation, or who introduced themselves plainly and described what they charge. Group spam is invisible at best and gets you removed at worst, and groups like these are moderated by people who have seen every version of it. The move is to be genuinely present and genuinely recommendable, which is slower and which also happens to be the thing that was always working.
The uncomfortable read
I have spent a lot of this blog arguing that Charleston search results reward the wrong things. I have written about agency pages that never name the state they are in, and about Google's AI calling local businesses on the phone to verify what it already had on file.
This is the same story from another direction. The machines are increasingly getting their information about Charleston businesses from somewhere other than Charleston business websites. Google is phoning you. Meta is reading your neighbors.
And I will say the part that does not flatter my own industry: a solo operator with no budget and a good reputation in three Lowcountry Facebook groups can land on a page that outranks a Charleston agency with a 3,000 URL site and a Semrush subscription. On that surface, publishing does not beat being known.
I do not think this replaces search engine work. Google still owns the volume by a wide margin, the map pack still books the jobs, and if your Google Business Profile is a mess then none of this matters yet. But I have stopped treating "where do we rank" as a question with one answer.
What I would actually do this week
Five things, in order, none of which take more than an evening.
- Open the page yourself. Go to
facebook.com/fb-answers/local-seo-services-charleston-sc, then swap the slug for your own trade and city:plumbing-services-charleston-sc,roofing-companies-charleston-sc,dentists-charleston-sc. Find out whether a page exists for what you sell and whether you are named on it. - Write down who is. If competitors are named and you are not, that is your gap, and it is a gap you can read in plain English rather than inferring from a rank tracker.
- Join the three or four real groups, not thirty. Local businesses of Charleston and the county and neighborhood groups where your actual customers live. Read for a week before you say anything.
- Answer recommendation threads in your trade. When somebody asks who to call for a leaking roof in West Ashley, answer it like a neighbor who knows the answer, not like a business running an ad. Those threads are the raw input for the summary.
- Log it. Add a line to whatever file you keep your rankings in. Date, query, whether a Meta answer page showed, whether you were named. In six weeks you will know whether this is a trend or a blip, and almost nobody in this market will have that record.
The Google work does not change. You still need a complete profile, recent reviews, service-area pages, and a site that loads. That is still what local SEO in Charleston SC means and it is still where the volume is.
What changed is that there is now a second scoreboard, it is scored by your neighbors, and it is currently sitting above the first one.
Do the first thing tonight. Open that URL with your own trade in the slug and find out whether Meta already has an opinion about who people should hire in Charleston, and whether your name is in it.
